Most of the Russian athletes who participated in the World Championships in Women’s Wrestling and Classical Wrestling in Serbia lost to the strongest opponents by far; they could not stand the excitement, the president of the Russian Wrestling Federation told . Mikhail Mamiashvili .
At the World Championships in Belgrade, Russian wrestlers won five medals out of a possible 30 and four Olympic licenses out of a possible 18. The Russians won four medals and four licenses in freestyle wrestling, one medal in Greco-Roman wrestling; at the women’s wrestling tournament, Russian representatives did not win medals and did not receive Olympic quotas.
– The result is obvious. There are a lot of things to analyze after the World Cup. The uncertainty of whether we will perform well or not has affected our athletes. It was only on the eve of the weigh-in before the start of the tournament that we finally decided on the lineup. There were completely incomprehensible restrictions – the head coach of the team did not even have the opportunity to enter the warm-up room, let alone manage the team normally.
In freestyle wrestling, we have a serious reserve of strength, there are bright leaders in this team. They managed to cope with enormous pressure. And what happened in our classical (Greco-Roman) and women’s wrestling teams is not about wrestling. They lost matches with a serious gap in points compared to those who are far from the world leaders. The determining factor was purely psychological. The coaches couldn’t handle the enthusiasm of the guys,” Mamiashvili told .
The World Championships in Belgrade will end on September 24. The Russians participated in the tournament in neutral status.
