New Zealand mixed martial artist Israel Adesanya has pleaded guilty to drink driving, the NZ Herald reports.
According to the publication, the incident occurred on August 19, a few weeks before the fight with American Sean Strickland at the UFC 293 tournament. According to the documents, Adesanya was accused of drunk driving. The blood alcohol level was 87 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood. The legal limit in New Zealand is 50 milligrams.
The maximum penalty for this charge is three months in prison or a fine of $4,500.
“I want to apologize to the community, my family and my team for my decision to drive after drinking at dinner.” I’m disappointed with my decision, it was a mistake.
I know people are looking at me, I want them to know that I don’t consider this behavior acceptable,” Adesanya said.
The fighter is expected to be sentenced in January 2024.
On September 10, Strickland defeated Adesanya by unanimous decision to win the UFC middleweight belt.
