Otto Wallin: “They called me an underdog, but in the fight against Gassiev I proved everyone wrong”

Swedish boxer Otto Wallin after beating a Russian Murat Gassiev said that as a result of the fight he forced many people to change their minds.

On Saturday in Belek, Turkey, Gassiev lost by split decision to Wallin in the fight for the WBA Inter Continental heavyweight title. The fight lasted all 12 rounds. The judges gave Wallin the victory by split decision.

– They told me before the fight that I was an outsider. But I believed in myself and proved everyone wrong. To be honest, I was very nervous when the decision was announced. I thought they could give it away [победу] him, but the judges ultimately made the right, albeit distinct, decision. I respect Murat, he’s a good boxer. Some people win and some people lose. I know a lot about Gassiev’s career. What are Murat’s prospects now? I’m one of the best in the heavyweight division. I showed it. Murat has powerful punches, but in the heavyweight division, everyone hits hard. So, nothing like that,” reports the correspondent, according to Wallin’s words.

Wallin took second place in the IBF rankings, which was vacant before the fight.

Former WBA and IBF cruiserweight champion Gassiev has 30 victories (23 by KO) and two defeats. The Russian has been competing in the heavyweight division since the fall of 2020 and has earned four debut victories during that time.

Wallin has 26 victories (14 by KO) with a defeat in September 2019 against the current WBC champion, the Briton Tyson Fury.
