Vitaly Slanov, coach of the Russian boxer Murata Gassieva said he would not challenge the judges’ decision following the fight with Swede Otto Wallin and that the athlete’s managers would deal with appeal issues.
On Saturday in Belek, Turkey, Gassiev lost to Wallin in a fight for the WBA Inter-Continental heavyweight title. The fight lasted all 12 rounds. The judges gave Wallin the victory by split decision.
— Why challenge the judges’ decision now? I was sure we had won exactly eight rounds. He backed away and didn’t even throw a full jab. Once, during a round, I got hit in the eye, and that was it. I think Murat won very convincingly. Call? This is a question for managers,” reports a correspondent.
Wallin took second place in the IBF rankings, which was vacant before the fight.
Former WBA and IBF cruiserweight champion Gassiev has 30 victories (23 by KO) and two defeats. The Russian has been competing in the heavyweight division since the fall of 2020 and has earned four debut victories during that time. Wallin has 26 victories (14 by KO) with a defeat in September 2019 against the current WBC champion, the Briton Tyson Fury.
