The American boxer instead decided to fight the undisputed super-middleweight world champion, Mexican Saul Alvarez. This fight ended with Alvarez winning by unanimous decision.

The Mexican boxer retained the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO championship titles in the second middleweight category.
Recall that Tim Tszyu is the son of the former absolute world boxing champion Kostya Tszyu.
