Russian wrestlers plan to participate in Olympic qualifying tournaments in Azerbaijan and Turkey

Russian wrestlers plan to participate in Olympic qualifying tournaments in Azerbaijan and Turkey in 2024, where they will have to obtain the maximum number of licenses, the president of the Russian Wrestling Federation said. Mikhail Mamiashvili .

In September, Russian wrestlers participated in the World Championships in Belgrade in neutral status and won five medals out of a possible 30 and four Olympic licenses out of a possible 18. The Russians won four medals and four licenses in freestyle wrestling, one medal in Greco-Roman wrestling; at the women’s wrestling tournament, Russian representatives did not win medals and did not receive Olympic quotas.

— Our closest international calendar: from April 4 to 7, 2024, the European Continental Tournament will take place in Baku, where licenses for the Olympic Games will be awarded. Then, from May 12 to 15, a global qualifying tournament will take place in Turkey during which the remaining licenses will compete. It is from these dates that we will build our internal calendar.

No one has given up on the task, we are obliged to win as many licenses as possible. I am convinced that in Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling we will obtain all the licenses for the Olympic Games. In women’s wrestling, we can apply mechanisms thanks to which, I think, we will win the lion’s share of licenses, ”reports the correspondent, according to Mamiashvili’s words.
