Makhachev said he dreams of fighting for a second UFC belt

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Islam Makhachev said that after defending the title in a fight with the Brazilian Charles Oliveira I would like to fight for the welterweight title.

Makhachev will face Oliveira again at UFC 294 on October 21. For Makhachev, this fight will be the second defense of the belt. UFC welterweight beltholder Leon Edwards of Great Britain will meet American Colby Covington at UFC 296 in December.

“I don’t know what the UFC has planned, but my dream is to fight for the second belt. Of course, I have a contract, so no matter what the UFC says, I will fight, no problem. But Edwards vs. Colby, I really believe I can beat the winner. I look at their abilities and I know my skills. It will be a good fight. I’m not saying I can defeat them easily. It will be a tough fight against a serious opponent. But I believe I can eliminate them both.

I hope that [Ковингтон] I’m going to win because I don’t know what Léon is talking about [встрече со мной]. I never heard Leon say he wanted this fight. But Colby really wants it. That’s why I expect him to win and we can meet. It will be a very good fight. And it should go to the USA. Colby has good wrestling technique and physical fitness, but, in my opinion, I will finish everything and hit him with a lot of punches, ”Makhachev said, as quoted by ESPN.

Makhachev and Oliveira fought for the lightweight title at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi in October 2022. The Russian fighter won in the second round and became the organization’s champion. He then defended his belt in a fight with Australian Alexander Volkanovski.
