WBC chief Mauricio Sulaiman has explained why he will not be involved in organizing a possible light heavyweight unification fight between Russia’s Dmitry. Bivolome and Arthur Beterbiev .
Bivol holds the World Boxing Association (WBA) title. Beterbiev holds belts according to the World Boxing Council (WBC), the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO). Bivol and Beterbiev suffered no defeats.
“We have always explained repeatedly that Bivol should contact the WBC and explain why the WBC should not consider him a Russian. He did not contact the WBC for several months. It is very simple. If he feels he is being mistreated and we should have a different approach then he should come to us, I have said that many times,” Sulaiman told Boxing News.
Suleiman also explained why he had no questions about Beterbiev’s nationality.
— He lived in Canada for 15 years. He has a passport, a boxing license from Canada. His children were born in Canada. It’s a completely different scenario,” Suleiman said.
Previously, the WBC decided to exclude Russian and Belarusian boxers from the rankings.
