Russian freestyle wrestler Akhmed Usmanov spoke on about how he felt when he was awarded the gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships, where Russians competed without a flag or anthem.
The World Wrestling Championships took place in September in Belgrade. Usmanov became world champion in the weight category up to 79 kg, which is not Olympic. The Russians were admitted to the tournament with neutral status.
— How does it feel to go to the awards ceremony without the anthem and uniform of Russia?
— A form would of course be a good thing. The United World of Wrestling (UWW) anthem was played, but in our country they still know what kind of country we represent. And they themselves know there [в UWW]Even though they try to stop our flag from being raised and the anthem from being played, they still understand what country we are defending.
— Were there any clandestine matches in terms of refereeing?
– I did not have. I knew this could happen and I tried to do it without making any mistakes so that there would be no controversial issues. If they [спорные моменты] were in my favor, I understood that the judges could give a point in favor of the opponent. Therefore, I tried to act carefully and prevent this from happening,” Usmanov said on .
