More than two dozen female boxers signed a statement calling for the possibility of boxing in 12 3-minute rounds in championship title fights, reports ESPN .
The announcement comes ahead of the Amanda Serrano-Danila Ramos fight on October 27. The fight, where Serrano will defend the IBF, WBO and WBA featherweight belts, will feature 12 rounds for the first time in women’s boxing.
Previously, 12-round title fights were held between men only. Most women’s title fights currently take place in a format of 10 rounds of 2 minutes.
“As women, we must fight step by step to achieve the same equality and respect that men enjoy. »We have made progress in our sport, but we still have a long way to go. For too long we have been underpromoted and underpaid. The tide has finally started to change as we have all proven that women’s boxing captures fans’ attention and creates moments the world will never forget – and we create those moments even though we rarely have the same time and same opportunity to show our skills. as well as our male colleagues.
This is why today we maintain the desire and dedication to have the choice to compete on the same stage, under the same rules, as men in professional boxing. We deserve the choice of 3 minute rounds, with 12 championship rounds to showcase our skills. We deserve the choice to build a more equal future for fighters everywhere. We hope that the boxing industry will support us as we have supported them throughout our career. This is our time, our right and our choice,” the statement said.
