Brazilian MMA fighter, Poliana Botelho was honest about the breast cancer she discovered in January and the period she experienced during treatment against the disease
Poliana Botelho She is 34 years old and is one of the best fighters in MMA from Brazil. In January, however, an unforeseen event caused her to slow down her career: breast cancer was diagnosed. In an interview with “Esporte Espetacular”, the athlete detailed what her routine and treatment against the disease has been like.
“I looked for a mastologist. She said: ‘There’s an X chance of it being cancer, but I can’t say anything. I need the exam’. Do you know when you… flew out of there? […]. On January 2nd, the results came out and the bombshell came. For us it becomes a bomb. ‘Wow, what now?’ Our lives change”explained Botelho.
You say: ‘What am I going to get? I’m not new to the sport, so [tenho que] stay idle for two years, what now? What am I going to do with my career?’ Everything was difficult. And my concern was just: ‘OK, what do I have to do?’ I just counted. I’m going to do the treatments, I’m going to fight, do everything, but I wanted to know the time. Chemo takes so much time, radio takes so much time, but I saw that there was no point in having to do the math, because everything was uncertain.”
Poliana also talked about how the fight may have helped her diagnose cancer and also help her get through it. “I remember my doctor saying that the nodule would be impalpable. In the fight, taking the blows, it ended up causing the lump that we felt. It seems that the fight made me discover cancer. And the fight made me strong to withstand him […]”he said.
“The fight is bad weather all the time. Those who live by fighting are always fighting with their mind, fighting with their body, diet, food. The fight prepared me to be strong at this moment.”. Furthermore, Botelho revealed: “You look in the mirror and stop finding yourself. There are bad days, but they pass, everything passes.”
