Ukrainian Valery Chebotar will be a rival to Russian Eduard Gasparyan in the fight for bronze at the World Karate Championships, which are taking place in Budapest.
Gasparyan and Chebotar participate in kumite in the weight category up to 84 kg. The Russian karateka lost to Egyptian Youssef Badawi in the semifinals, the Ukrainian was eliminated in the fourth round, and then defeated Australian Jonathan Freund in the consolation tournament. The fight between Gasparyan and Chebotar will take place on October 28.
The World Karate Federation (WKF) previously allowed the Russian team to participate in the tournament, with athletes performing in neutral status. According to Inside the Games, the Ukrainian Karate Federation intended to file a protest with the WKF regarding the Russians’ admission.
