Boxer of the “Kama” team Gabil Mammadov considers himself a centuries-old athlete at the ” Victory Cup”.
Mammadov, who competes in the weight class up to 65kg, beat Moscow’s Ibragim Tarkoev by unanimous decision on Sunday.
– I was opposed by a good opponent who is older than me. I knew this boxer and I adjusted the tactics, in the end I managed to win. Public support loaded, I gave it my all. Victory Cup leaders met in this fight, which gave extra motivation,” Mammadov told reporters. – I managed to feel the atmosphere of the tournament, a lot of fans gathered. Participating in such competitions is a great experience for me. I think I showed myself perfectly at the Kazan stage. And I really liked this atmosphere of professional boxing. It energized me even more.
– For Olympic boxing, I am already a fairly old boxer. I am 28 years old. Rivals are now meeting youngsters, and they are even more dangerous. When you box with older people, you understand their tactics, which they buy into, and younger people sometimes act in ways they themselves don’t expect. They are more dangerous, all beating, fast. This creates difficulties. I can’t say that I’m tired in the duel. My goal was not to give 100%, to kill my opponent in the ring. I hit, I had tactics – the opponent is higher and I worked with the belly. If it worked, he transferred it to the head.
Overall victory is important, you have to box in the Superfinal. But there are personal tournaments ahead – Spartakiad, the Russian championship, where you need to confirm your personal level, your place in the team, the boxer added.
– You are participating in the 2020 Olympics, silver medalist at the 2019 European Games, and your victories in such competitions are taken for granted …
– It’s not the best thing that can go out with me. That is, the opponents come out and understand that in case of defeat there will be nothing terrible. They box for fun, but I feel like you have to and you have to. A boxer of this level has no right to lose against a youngster.
– Do you plan to participate in the ” Victory Cup” in the future?
– I will definitely play in Orenburg. I’m the number one boxing star there. I am convinced that the atmosphere will not be worse there than in Kazan. And even better. And even now a whole group of fans have traveled 800 km from Orenburg to cheer me and Hikmet Garayev on.
Six teams take part in the tournament: Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Siberia (boxers from the Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Districts), Tula (Central Federal District), Moscow (Moscow), Stalingrad (South Caucasian of the North) and “Kama” (federal districts of the Volga and the Urals).
The boxers will compete in Kazan from July 1-3, then the athletes will travel to St. Petersburg (July 8-10) and Orenburg (July 15-17). On July 30, the tournament final will be held in Moscow. The prize fund is 20 million rubles.
