The International Boxing Association (IBA) has granted temporary membership to the Swiss Boxing Federation and the Norfolk Island Boxing Association, according to the IBA website.
The IBA Board of Directors made the corresponding decision by vote. The recognition of the two federations will be valid until the meeting of the next IBA Congress, which will be held in Dubai on December 9.
“We warmly welcome the Norfolk Island Boxing Association, as well as the Swiss Boxing Federation, returning to the IBA following the wise decision of their general assembly. For us, this is a sign of confidence and the right direction we have chosen as an organization. With a strong, independent and stable IBA, together we can achieve more,” said IBA President Umar Kremlev.
The Swiss Boxing Federation announced on June 1 its decision to leave the International Boxing Association and join the world boxing organization, created as an alternative to the IBA. In August, the General Assembly of the Swiss Federation voted to return to the IBA.
The executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had previously recommended that the organization’s session withdraw recognition of the IBA because the association had not met the necessary conditions for reinstatement. In June 2023, the decision was approved by a majority.
