Number two in the UFC lightweight rankings Justin Gaethje said he was preparing to fight against the defending champion Islam Makhacheva .
Lightweight champion Makhachev retained his title at UFC 294, knocking out Alexander Volkanovski in the first round.
“I haven’t had any conversations with the UFC about the Makhachev fight yet. But I expect a fight against Islam in February or March next year, that’s what I’m preparing for.
Like I said, Oliveira had one chance, then he got a second chance and turned it down.
Thanks to the experience I had in the fight with Khabib, I understand that he is a different fighter. I wasn’t afraid of Khabib, but he’s an intimidating guy, now that factor won’t exist. Now I have more confidence in myself.
“I think he’s a much better option for me than Khabib, and I think I can really throw punches effectively and then create opportunities to do maximum damage to my opponent,” Gaethje said according to TMZ Sports.
Makhachev, 31, has 25 victories and one defeat.
