Russian boxers’ chances of reaching the Olympics are close to zero, says Tishchenko

Double Olympic champion Alexei Tishchenko explained what needs to happen for Russian boxers to receive licenses to participate in the Olympic Games.

In October 2022, the International Boxing Association (IBA), under the leadership of Umar Kremlev, lifted restrictions on Russians and Belarusians; athletes compete with the flag and anthem. In 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the executive committee’s decision to withdraw recognition of the IBA because the association had not met the necessary conditions for reinstatement. Today, at the same time, a new world boxing federation is developing, to which a whole group of countries around the world have already joined.

— The main thing that has to happen is the end of the special operation, the end of this story. This is a fundamental factor. Then we must try to find common ground with the global community, the International Olympic Committee. An Asian Boxing Confederation conference was held recently. By a majority of votes, everyone supported remaining in the IBA.

If the IOC prohibits boxers from advancing in tournaments, then lateral movements may begin. So far, everything is going more or less well in this political situation. Competitions take place, our athletes participated in the World Championships with the flag. But the World Championships did not constitute selection for the Olympic Games. The selection will be made by the IOC. And participation in the Olympics is possible with a neutral status, refusing symbols, etc., but our best athletes compete for CSKA and Dynamo, so the boxers’ chances of going to the Olympics tend to zero, ”said Tishchenko told Metaratings.ru.

Previously, the IOC said a decision on admitting Russians to the Games would be made at the “appropriate time.”
