Russian cutter Luchnikov spoke about injuries to Briedis and Opetai after one-on-one title fight

Russian cutman Dmitry Luchnikov, who worked in the corner of Latvia Mairis Briedis in a duel with an Australian Jay Opetaya in a conversation with , spoke in detail about the serious injuries of the two boxers.

On Saturday in Australia, Opetaya, 27, beat Briedis, 37, by unanimous decision and won the IBF belt in the Latvian’s first heavyweight.

– In total, Mairis had five facial injuries: three small but unpleasant cuts. A hematoma rose – even left on the forehead, under the eye, it stopped its development and did not allow it to close. But the nose was decently broken by an uppercut in one of the early rounds. In a round or two I must have cut, bruised and nose all at the same time. And flowed from two nostrils all the time. Hands, thank God, intact. The opponent’s jaw was shattered at the end of the twelfth round. That is, another 15 seconds, and a knockout of even the strongest blow could well happen. The opponent clung to Mairis after the kick and, perhaps, he would have been lying on the canvas in general, and they would have opened the scoring for him. After the fight, he couldn’t close his mouth, like Arthur Abraham once did during a fight with Miranda, Luchnikov told .

Opetaya is undefeated in the professional ring, having won 22 fights, 17 of which ended ahead of schedule. Briedis suffered the second loss of his career with 28 wins (20 KOs). This first happened in January 2018 in a fight with Oleksandr Usyk, when the Ukrainian took the WBC belt from Briedis.
