Khabib Nurmagomedov: “I don’t regret deciding to retire at all”

Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov admitted that he does not regret the decision to end his professional career.

Nurmagomedov finished his professional career in 2020. He remained undefeated inside the Octagon, where he had 29 victories in 29 fights. Nurmagomedov became UFC lightweight champion in 2018, after which he defended the title three times. Nurmagomedov fought his last fight with American Justin Gaethje on October 24, 2020 at UFC 254, winning by choke in the second round.

“My father passed away on July 3 and about three weeks later I spoke to my mother and made this decision with her. From that point on, only my mother and I knew. I called Dana White myself and told her I was up for it. Then I knew it was my last fight. No one else knew, I didn’t tell anyone.

When you are the best fighter in the world, when you are full of energy and have money and fame, it is very difficult to give all that up. It’s not easy to say no to $20 or $30 million, but for me personally, all of those things are not paramount. It’s not the most important thing. It was not an easy decision, but once made, it became final. I left the sport and I’m happy. “I don’t regret making this decision at all,” Khabib said in an interview on the UFC YouTube channel.
