Russian MMA fighter Kirill Sidelnikov expressed the opinion that UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev should change weight categories.
On October 21, Makhachev defeated Australian Alexander Volkanovski by first-round knockout at UFC 294, defending the lightweight championship belt. This victory elevated Makhachev one place in the rankings of the best fighters in the UFC, regardless of weight categories, but left current heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the lead. Makhachev’s stats in the UFC are 25 wins, 1 loss.
“I think Islam needs to progress in the welterweight category: in the lightweight category he ate everyone.” And he would beat the same Charles Oliveira again. It would be interesting to see Makhachev face Justin Gaethje or Dustin Poirier if he stays at lightweight.
As for fighters who could reach Makhachev’s status in the near future, I would name Usman and Umar Nurmagomedov. It is not for nothing that these athletes have this surname. I would also mention Roman Kopylov. You definitely need to watch him: the guy does his job wonderfully, without unnecessary words,” quotes RT Sidelnikov.
