‘I’m ready to fight Volkov, no problem’ – heavyweight Derrick Lewis on rematch with Russian fighter

UFC fighter Derrick Lewis in an interview with he denied the Russian team’s report Alexandra Volkova about refusing a post-fight rematch at UFC 229.

Heavyweight number 10 Lewis defeated the Russian by knockout in the last minute of the third round in a fight in Las Vegas at UFC 229 on October 6, 2018. Previously, Volkov’s team reported in an interview with that Lewis or his representatives had refused a rematch. Lewis is reportedly only interested in a title fight with the UFC championship belt on the line. The 37-year-old American will have his next fight at the UFC Fight Night 231 tournament in Sao Paulo against Gilton Almeida. Volkov, after three consecutive victories, is waiting for a possible opponent.

— In Russia, you are very well remembered for your fight with Alexander Volkov. You lost to him for three rounds, but managed to take out Alexander at the last minute. Can you remember what you were thinking at the end of the third round?

“I heard my corners yelling at me something like, ‘Come on, Derrick, we need to get involved.’ And at that moment, Volkov also started saying something like: “Come on, Derrick, get involved.” And I was like, “Okay, now I’m going to give you what you want.” And this episode itself gave me more energy to hit.

— Alexander’s team said you twice refused to take revenge. It’s true?

– No, I’ve never heard of it. I didn’t refuse and my manager didn’t even talk to me about it. I’m ready to fight Volkov, no problem at all. After this fight, we can do it easily.

— You have started training for running, how often do you do them?

— Now I run 3 miles every day. I have never done this before, but now running three kilometers without stopping will no longer be a problem for me, I think I can do it in 20 minutes. Before, I wouldn’t have run a mile without stopping.

— You showed up at the weigh-in before the last fight with six-pack abs. Was it difficult to follow the diet?

“It’s really difficult because I don’t like to limit myself when it comes to food.” The coaches forbid me from drinking soda, it’s very difficult for me without it,” Lewis told .
