Athletistic/MMA. Russian UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev shared in an interview with Match TV his thoughts on why he was looking for a quick victory over Australian fighter Alexander Volkanovski.

Makhachev won UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on October 21, knocking out Volkanovski in the first round to successfully defend his UFC championship belt. Volkanovski came in as an opponent, replacing the injured Charles Oliveira. The victory was the 25th of his career for the 31-year-old Russian fighter, with one defeat.

“I was happy to fight Volkanovski. I was in great shape. A rematch with him was bound to happen sooner or later. When he became my opponent, I was very happy, because many were ready to replace him. It was the perfect option for me.

Finishing the fight early wasn’t just my goal, it was my dream. We had a good fight in the first fight, but I lost in the last round, and a lot of people judged the outcome of the fight from that round. Therefore, I really wanted to finish the fight ahead of schedule, so that there were no doubts,” Makhachev said in an interview with the show “Everyone for the match!” on Match TV .
