Australian fighter Whittaker apologizes for comments on Makhachev’s victory over Volkanovski

Australian fighter Robert Whittaker apologized for downplaying the merits of the Russian UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhacheva in a duel with Alexander Volkanovski .

On October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, Makhachev knocked out Volkanovski in the first round and defended the championship belt. The Australian replaced the Brazilian Charles Oliveira as opponent, injured on the eve of the fight. The February fight between Makhachev and Volkanovski ended with the Russian victory by unanimous decision.

– I want to stop there. I’m sorry for underestimating Makhachev’s achievements in defeating Volkanovski. This is not what I intended to do, although it looked like it. I’m not disparaging the way Makhachev fought an opponent who had little time to prepare, fought a guy who gave him a hard time in the first fight, and adapted to a change in opponent. What he did that night was incredible,” Whittaker said according to MMA Mania.

Makhachev, 31, has 25 victories with one defeat in mixed martial arts.
