On October 21, at the UFC 294 tournament in Abu Dhabi, the Russian knocked out Australian Alexander Volkanovski in the first round and defended the lightweight championship belt.
Makhachev, 32, moved from second place to first in the rankings, ahead of American Jon Jones. Then come respectively the Australian Alex Volkanovski, the British Leon Edwards and the Brazilian Charles Oliveira.
