Russian fighter Vyacheslav Vasilyevsky commenting on the UFC interim heavyweight title fight between Russians Sergei Pavlovich and British Tom Aspinall said that the winner of such fights feels like a champion in his own right.
Pavlovich will face Aspinel for the interim UFC heavyweight title on November 11 in New York at UFC 295. The current holder of the belt, American Jon Jones, was scheduled to meet his compatriot Stipe Miocic, but in Due to Jones’ shoulder injury, the fight was canceled.
– This is a common practice – the UFC is not the only one to do this. If the champion cannot defend the belt, then an interim belt fight is arranged between the main contenders. In general, the temporary belt and the struggle for it constitute an important and fundamental step towards the “real” belt.
A fighter who becomes interim champion doesn’t feel like one. He feels like someone who won this belt here and now; at the moment he is even more of a champion than the owner of a “real” belt,” Vasilevsky said on the show “Everyone for the match!”
