American Terence Crawford lost the absolute welterweight world title after a decision by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), reports Boxingscene.
Crawford defeated Errol Spence in July to unify the IBF, World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles. In August, the IBF sent a letter to Crawford’s promoters, in which they forced them to enter into negotiations with mandatory challenger Jaron Ennis. In September, a response was received stating that the fight agreement between Crawford and Spence contained a rematch clause that had been activated.
– No contract for a title fight shall contain any clause or provision of any kind guaranteeing or in any way guaranteeing or promising to any competitor that he will compete again for the title if such clause or provision prevents a mandatory defense of the title, – the message says.
Based on the above, the IBF withdrew its recognition of Crawford as welterweight world champion.
After an early loss to Crawford on July 29, Spence exercised his right to a rematch, but it’s not yet clear when he plans to stage it.
During his career, the 36-year-old Crawford scored 40 victories, including 31 by knockout.
