IBA chief confident boxing will not be left out of 2028 Olympics program

President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Umar Kremlev said he was convinced that boxing will be on the program for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles (United States).

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in June that it was canceling recognition of the IBA. The association appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and asked the court to suspend the IOC’s recommendations pending a final verdict. In October, IOC President Thomas Bach said the question of including boxing in the 2028 Olympics program was on hold.

— I cannot speak for the IOC, but I am sure that athletes will have the opportunity to participate in the 2028 Olympic Games. Boxing is one of the cornerstones of the Olympic movement. The two most popular sports are football and boxing. In football, it takes 22 people to fill a stadium, in boxing it takes two.

If you remove boxing from the Olympic program, boxing will not lose and the Olympics will lose popularity.

Look at professional boxers: they are much more famous than those who participate in the Olympic Games, it’s a statistic. In professional boxing, athletes can become world stars and at the Olympics, boxers represent their country.

I am sure that in 2028, boxing will be on the Olympic program. “It’s one of the most popular sports in the United States,” Kremlev said at a news conference.

The Los Angeles Olympic Games will take place from July 14 to 30, 2028.
