President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Umar Kremlev said the organization provides assistance to athletes and federations, so its role can be compared to that of the Church.
— The IBA is an organization that houses athletes. Yesterday I met the Pope and we prayed. After the prayer, he spoke about world peace, said that we should help each other and support people.
The IBA is like a church for boxers. The Church helps those in need and aspires to peace and dialogue, which is also what the IBA wishes. It is the church of sports or the temple of sports. Each coach and each federation can contact us, they will benefit from support, this is why the federation was created. That’s why we organize events and allocate $10 million in prize money for the World Cup,” Kremlev said at a news conference in Paris.
Kremlev has headed the IBA since December 2020; in November 2018, he joined the organization’s executive committee.
The IBA allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions under their national flags, despite recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In June, the IOC accepted the recommendation of the organization’s executive committee not to return recognition to the IBA, as the association had not fulfilled the necessary conditions put forward in December 2021. The IOC executive board also recommended to the session “in the interest of athletes and sport” that boxing be kept on the program of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in accordance with previous decisions. At the same time, the world boxing organization was created, which already included a number of countries.
