Athletistic/MMA. UFC chief Dana White has shared his thoughts on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s decision to retire in 2020. White admitted that the Russian fighter’s departure was particularly difficult for him. Khabib finished his UFC career as lightweight champion with a perfect 29-0 record.

Khabib announced his retirement after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020, having fought just one fight since the death of his trainer and father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. White said he decided to retire Khabib on March 19, 2021, taking the UFC lightweight championship from him.

In an interview with Theo Von, White expressed the difficulty he felt losing one of the promotion’s biggest stars.

—Is there a retired fighter who broke your heart?

— The departure of Khabib, because I think he could have offered and done a lot more. However, after his father’s death, he seems to have lost all joy in fighting.
