American boxer Jermell Charlo has relinquished the International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior middleweight world title, according to the organization’s website.
Charlo informed IBF President Daryl Peoples of the decision, noting that the mandatory defense of the belt is an issue for him at this stage of his career.
In October, Russian Bakhram Murtazaliev became the mandatory challenger for the belt. The IBF ordered Murtazaliev to negotiate with the next available challenger, who according to media reports is German representative Jack Culcay.
Charlo was also a WBO world champion, but lost the title when he turned down a fight with Australian Tim Tszyu in favor of a meeting with Mexican Saul Alvarez.
Murtazaliev is 30 years old and in the professional ring he has won 21 victories in 21 fights, winning 15 times ahead of schedule.
