Klimas: Lomachenko will return next year, and it will be a fight for the lightweight title

There is a possibility that this will be a fight against the newly crowned WBC champion Shakur Stevenson

Egis Klimasmanager of a former world champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenkoexpects that his protégé will return to the ring during 2024 solely for the title fight.

“We should expect him to be back sometime next year. After this “defeat” in quotes [от Хэйни] he simply said that he was not going to do anything until the end of the year. He’s taking it in stride, doing everything he normally does at home, and then next year will come and we’ll start learning about fighting.”

“We’re not going to fight just for the sake of fighting. He wants to fight for the title, so we’ll see what we can do.”

“Will it be a lightweight title fight? Yes,” Klimas emphasized.

Lomachenko fought his last fight in May 2023, losing to Devin Haney in the fight for the title of absolute world champion. Many experts then considered that the result of the fight was unfair. After the defeat, Vasily decided to take a vacation until the end of the year.

This fall, Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum announced plans to organize the Ukrainian boxer’s fight against George Kambosos in Australia in February 2024. Lou DiBella, the Australian’s promoter, announced a fight between George and Vasily in early spring. However, Klimas recently denied rumors of an agreement regarding a fight with Kambosos.

According to the latest information, now we can talk about a title fight between the Ukrainian and former world featherweight and second featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson, who defeated Edwin De Los Santos on November 17 and won the vacant WBC lightweight title.

Stevenson repeatedly challenged Lomachenko to a fight and stated that Vasily was offered the largest fee for the fight.
