“It’s called digital autism.” Fighter Shlemenko explained why he keeps children away from smartphones

Russian mixed martial arts fighter Alexander Shlemenko in an interview with , he explained why he tries to protect children from using gadgets.

Shlemenko is the father of five children, the fighter’s eldest daughter is 10 years old.

— You have children of different ages. At what age will you start giving them a phone?

— The eldest daughter has a telephone, Svyatoslav (the eldest son – approximately) had a push-button one, but he constantly loses them, so for now he does not have a telephone. For our daughter, we limit its use a lot: only for calls, then we pick it up. For example, she goes to the gym in the morning, she has a phone there, but only to call from training. She doesn’t use it at school either, just so she can collect it.

— What’s not to like about kids being able to watch the internet while searching with their smartphone?

“That’s not the point, it’s deeper than that.” This is called digital autism. Your child is becoming fuzzy. I grew up without a phone and learned everything. But if you have not learned to walk, you will not learn to run; you must first learn to walk. Children who use the phone a lot have poorer concentration. They become capricious, remember less well and attention works differently. And they don’t produce what they should. I’m not saying that’s all, I’m saying there is a risk.

— What do you say to your daughter when she says: “Dad, everyone in the class has a phone, but not me”?

“That’s what she said, that’s why she had a phone.” And it was a mistake. She only uses it for a limited time. Basically, she doesn’t have much time: we wake up at 7 a.m., we go to kindergarten, at that time she’s not using her phone, she’s just woken up. I leave the kindergarten and take Angelina to training. His gymnastics starts at 8:30, then I take Sviatoslav, we are a little late, because he also trains at 8:30. We pick her up at 12-12:30, she needs to eat quickly and school starts at 1:00 p.m. She studies until the evening, then goes home and does her homework. Maybe go for a walk if there’s time. At ten o’clock in the evening we go to bed. When should she use the phone? The phone is only needed for calls,” Shlemenko told .
