Silver medalist at the London Olympics, former judoka Alexander Mikhailin told that the results of the Grand Slam stage in Tokyo will not be indicative in determining the composition of the Paris Olympic Games.
The Judo Grand Slam in Tokyo took place on December 2 and 3. Russian judokas won two gold and four bronze medals.
On Friday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced it would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympics to benefit from neutral status as individual athletes.
— Could the Grand Slam in Japan be revealing in determining the programming of the Games?
– I think not. There is no point in making a forecast now. I don’t work for the national team and I don’t know how the Games preparation system works there. For the Japanese, everything is clear: almost a year before the Olympic Games, the composition of the athletes preparing is revealed.
It’s not fair to reveal the lineup at this point, given it’s been a tough year. Tasoev and Bashaev, Adamyan and Kanikovsky have all come a long way and competed in many places. If you give based on the result, then there is no choice here: Adamyan and Tasoev are the current world champions. And if we look at those who are better prepared right now, then the coaching staff should make that decision next year.
— Which is more correct: to send to the Olympic Games the one who was most stable during the season or the one who is strongest at the moment?
— I haven’t seen how they train. If the Games were held now, I would take Tasoev and Adamyan. But there is still a lot of time, everything can change a lot,” Mikhailin told .
The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
