AJ gives the advantage to the Ukrainian over Fury, based on his own experience
Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua suggested that the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO champion Alexander Usik will prevail in the February confrontation against the WBC title holder Tyson Fury.
“I really want to be at this fight. You’ve probably heard this more than once, but I think Usyk is a phenomenal fighter and has a great team around him.”
“You’re only as good as your team, and he has a really good team. I was in the ring with him and studied him. I think that it is he who can prevail, probably my experience of confronting Usyk in the ring helps me think so. I think his skill level is top notch.”
Earlier, John Fury, Tyson’s father, suggested that the advantage in the upcoming title confrontation would be on the side of the Ukrainians, since the “Gypsy King” is surrounded by non-professionals. Previously, former world champion in two categories, Billy Joe Saunders, spoke in a similar vein. Back in November, he advised the “Gypsy King” to change his environment and “recruit a normal team.”
In the first half of December, Joshua said that he would support Usik in the fight with Fury. AJ faced the Ukrainian twice in the professional ring. In September 2021, the Briton lost all his titles to Usik, losing by unanimous decision. In the 2022 rematch, Anthony lost by split decision.
On the night of December 23-24, Joshua defeated Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin by technical knockout in the fifth round in the final fight of a grand boxing evening in Saudi Arabia.
The Usik-Fury fight for the title of absolute heavyweight champion will officially take place on February 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Initially, the fight was planned to be organized on December 23 in Riyadh. However, it later became clear that the “Gypsy King” would not have time to prepare for this time after the fight with Francis Ngannou at the end of October.
Fury defeated Ngannou via split decision. It was reported that the Briton received two cuts in a fight with the former UFC champion.
Usik fought his last fight on August 27 in Wroclaw, Poland. The Ukrainian knocked out Daniel Dubois in the 9th round and defended his championship titles.
