Warren: IBF would be wrong to strip Usyk-Fury winner of belt

The promoter believes that boxers can ignore the decisions of sanctioning bodies

Promoter Frank Warren believes that the IBF would be wrong to make its belt vacant immediately after the absolute title fight between Alexander Usik And Tyson Furyif both boxers want to have a rematch instead of a mandatory defense.

“We’ll see what happens after the fight. I mean, it would be pretty bad for them, but we’ll see what happens.”

“No, we haven’t talked to the IBF. They have their own views and they are entitled to them. If it’s a really great fight and he deserves a rematch, then that’s what will happen.”

“Given the season in Riyadh and the money involved, boxing’s governing bodies will have to be a little more sensible. I can imagine a situation in which the sanctioning authorities will simply be ignored.”

The Usik-Fury fight for the title of absolute heavyweight champion will officially take place on February 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Initially, the fight was planned to be organized on December 23 in Riyadh. However, it later became clear that Tyson would not have time to prepare for this time after the fight with Francis Ngannou at the end of October.

The title fight contains a possible rematch clause. In this case, the IBF has the right to refuse the belt holder a re-fight and insist on a mandatory defense of the title. If the champion refuses, the organization is ready to make the belt vacant and schedule a title fight. Croatian Filip Hrgovic and Briton Anthony Joshua are considered potential candidates for the fight.
