Russian boxer Artur Beterbiev commented on the “atypical” result of his doping control before the fight with Briton Callum Smith.
Beterbiev will defend his WBC, WBO and IBF light heavyweight championship belts against WBC mandatory challenger Smith on January 13 in Quebec, Canada. Beterbiev has 19 first victories in 19 fights. Smith has 29 victories and one defeat, which he suffered in 2020 against Mexican Saul Alvarez.
As reported by journalist Kevin Iole’s website, “atypical” results for human growth hormone and androstanediol were found during the Russian’s doping test. It should be noted that additional tests on the boxer gave negative results.
“I have learned that Callum intended to spread misleading information about my VADA testing program.” Let me be clear: I am a pure athlete. In my entire amateur and professional career, I have never tested positive for a banned substance and I have followed all VADA requirements and protocols in preparation for this fight.
Any attempt to imply otherwise through phrases is defamatory. This behavior goes beyond trash talk. Callum is already looking for an excuse and an opportunity to get out of the fight. See you on Saturday,” Beterbiev quoted Iola as saying.
