The Briton was knocked down twice, after which his coach stopped the fight
World champion according to WBC, WBO and IBF light heavyweight titles Artur Beterbiev (20-0, 20 KOs) defeated the British by technical knockout Callum Smith (29-2, 21 KOs). The title fight took place in Quebec, Canada.
The current champion dominated the entire fight. After the fifth round, Smith’s team was forced to stop the blood from the Briton’s nose.
In the seventh round, Beterbiev knocked down the challenger twice. Smith managed to get up both times, but eventually his trainer entered the ring and stopped the fight.
Beterbiev’s previous fight was last January, defeating Anthony Yarde. Smith hasn’t boxed in nearly a year and a half since his knockout win over Mathieu Boderlik in August 2022. The Briton lost by knockout for the first time in his career.
The Beterbiev-Smith fight was planned to take place on August 19, 2023. However, the title defense had to be postponed due to an infection in the champion’s jaw.
