Russian boxer Umar Salamov told that he intends to win the championship belt in the premier heavyweight division, and the fight with compatriot Igor Mikhalkin is the first step in achieving this goal.
The fight between Salamov and Mikhalkin for the Eurasian Boxing Council (EBP) heavyweight belt will take place on February 24 in Moscow. Previously, both boxers competed in the light heavyweight division. Mikhalkin (25-3, KO 11) owned the IBO and EBU belts and also won the WBO title – in March 2018 the Russian lost ahead of schedule to his compatriot Sergey Kovalev. Salamov (27-2, KO 20) won the WBA belt in December 2021, but lost to another Russian, Dmitry Bivol, by unanimous decision.
Mikhalkin and Salamov did not officially fight in 2023.
— The fight with Mikhalkin is very important for me. I’m returning to the ring after a long break in a new category. Mikhalkin is a very experienced and strong opponent, which is exactly what I need right now. It’s not even close to a passing game. I think a very competitive matchup awaits me. The meeting with Mikhalkin is a real test for me. I want to become a world champion in the premier heavyweight division, and now will be the start of my journey. Preparations are in full swing. Every day I feel even stronger,” Salamov told .
