Russian judoka Abuladze: “It’s an Olympic year, I want to qualify for the Olympic Games and compete there with dignity”

Russian judoka Iago Abouladze told that he would like to qualify for and succeed at the Paris Olympics.

On Friday, Abuladze won gold in the weight category up to 66 kg at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Odivelas, defeating Azerbaijan’s Yashar Najafov in the final. Russian judokas participate in the tournament in neutral status.

— It’s an Olympic year, I want to qualify for the Olympics, to compete with dignity. There is a lot of pressure, there are 66 of us, there are a lot of them, the competition is very strong. We have to do our best in every tournament,” Abuladze said on .

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on December 8 that it would grant neutral status to Russian and Belarusian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics. However, recommendations for admission include ban on the Russian national team from participating in team competitions.

The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
