Six of the twelve fights in the ONE Friday Fights 49 tournament on Friday, January 26 ended by knockout and one fight ended by technical knockout after the fourth knockout in one round. ONE League president Chatri Sityodtong paid six $10,000 bonuses to the fighters.
Dayakaev eliminated Cherkez
Dagestan’s Abdulla Dayakaev won his second consecutive victory in the ONE League, winning by knockout in the second round against Turkish representative Shevket Cherkez. The fight took place under Muay Thai rules in the bantamweight division.
Cherkez started the fight with wild punches, trying to catch the young fighter off guard. But this did not bother 21-year-old Dayakaev, he started working remotely. At the start of the second round, Dayakaev grabbed his opponent’s leg, performed a sweep, and when Cherkez fell, the Dagestani sent him a knee strike. At this point, the fight was stopped – the blow was declared prohibited and Cherkez was given time to recover. The fight continued and in the second round, Dayakaev increased the pressure on his opponent and sent the “Turkish assassin” to the canvas with a right elbow counterpunch. He maintained his momentum to finally finish Cherkez with a short left hook at 1:39 of the second round.
Haggerty’s dominant debut
One of the most intriguing fights of the tournament was the debut of 19-year-old Englishman Freddie Haggerty, the younger brother of ONE two-sport champion (Muay Thai and kickboxing) Jonathan Haggerty. And the brother of the legendary “General” Huggetry did not disappoint the audience. In a strawweight Muay Thai fight against the dangerous Dankalong, he demonstrated true warrior spirit and filigree technique. The opponents imposed a high pace from the first seconds of the fight. Haggerty attacked, but Dankalong worked in a tough Thai style and returned blow for blow, and even managed to knock his opponent to the canvas at the end of the first frame. This only provoked his opponent – he turned on full throttle in the second round and, in the 14th second, performed a sharp combination with his hands, dismantling his opponent in detail.
Haggerty earned a knockout bonus and improved his record to 21-4.
Nakrob destroyed Pettonglore in the main tournament battle
Nakrob Fairtex and Pettonglor Sitluangpinumphon finished the tournament with a thrilling three-round fight, with Nakrob emerging victorious by unanimous decision. Pettonglor was more lively at the start of the fight. Thanks to his ability to work in advance, after two minutes of fighting, he knocked his opponent to the ground. Nakrob decided to win back and throughout the second round he dried Pettonglor’s legs. The outcome of the fight was decided in the third round, where at the last minute Nakrob managed to knock down his opponent several times, achieve victory and earn a bonus for a great fight.
Nakrob, 25, is now 64-21.
