Russian freestyle wrestler Shamil Sharipov changed his sporting citizenship; the athlete’s profile on the United World Wrestling (UWW) website shows the flag of Bahrain.
The 26-year-old athlete’s profile change was made on January 31.
In October 2020, Sharipov lost in the final of the Russian championship in the weight category up to 125 kg to Alan Khugaev. In December of the same year, in Belgrade, he won the individual World Cup, beating the Pole Robert Baran in the final.
The 2022 Ivan Yarygin Memorial Cup is considered Sharipov’s last competition under the Russian flag. There he took eighth place.
Previously, his younger brother, Magomed Sharipov, started playing for the Bahrain national team.
