World champion according to WBC, IBF and WBO light heavyweight Arthur Beterbiev told how he reacted to the news of the “atypical” doping control, emphasizing that he had never used banned substances.
On January 13 in Quebec, Beterbiev defeated Smith by seventh-round technical knockout and defended his championship belts. Beterbiev’s statistics are 20 early victories in 20 professional fights. Before the fight, information appeared on the website of journalist Kevin Iole that “atypical” results for growth hormone and androstanediol were found during the 38-year-old Russian’s drug test. Additional tests on the boxer returned negative results.
“I heard about it during the preparation for the battle. Honestly, it was very unpleasant. That day I had a workout. I trained in the morning and immediately afterwards the coach announced the news. Moreover, he initially called the result of the doping control not atypical, but positive. I don’t know if he mistransmitted the information or if I heard it wrong. In reality, everything was different.
I have never used illegal substances and I understand that very well. I was tested several times, both during my years of performance as a member of the Russian national team and after turning professional – there were no questions,” Beterbiev was quoted as saying by RT.
