After the fight, the Kazakhstani will have to decide at what weight he will continue to perform
The World Boxing Association (WBA) has sanctioned the fight between Kazakh boxer Gennady Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) and Cuban Erislandy Lara (29-6-3, 17 KOs) for the middleweight title.
Golovkin received special clearance to move up to super middleweight in order to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Boxers will meet each other for the third time on September 17.
After that, Golovkin will have 5 days to decide which category to stay in. If the Kazakhstani decides to defend the middleweight title, he will have 120 days to prepare for the fight with Lara.
The Cuban holds the title of “permanent” WBA middleweight champion. If Golovkin remains in the category above, Lara will automatically receive the title of “super” world champion.
In 2017, the first match between Golovkin and Canelo ended in a draw. In the second fight, Alvarez won by split decision.
Golovkin fought his last fight in April, defeating Japan’s Ryota Murata to unify the middleweight titles.
