Fury has already started training after the cut that disrupted the fight with Usyk. This is possible, but now there are even more questions about postponing the fight with the Ukrainian

Spoiler alert: Fury has had worse injuries.

Failure of the plan for February 17 unifying heavyweight bout between WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO title holder Alexander Usik and WBC champion Tyson Fury – so far the main sports disappointment of 2024. So far, the Usyk-Fury fight has received a new date. Once again, as has happened several times already, the British boxer declares his readiness to enter the ring against Usik on May 18 and, allegedly, despite his recent injuries, has already returned to the training room.

The fact that Fury received a cut during the penultimate week of sparring before the fight with Usyk became known on February 2. The Gypsy King most likely received stitches on his wound that same day. On August 18, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said that he spoke with Fury a few days ago, and he admitted that he was already working in the gym. It turns out that about two weeks passed between the surgery and Fury’s return to training. According to the expert, this period is quite enough for the wound to heal and stitches to be removed.

“Usually, if the wound is shallow, the stitches can be removed after 5-10 days,” sports doctor Igor Pedchenkov told Sport Arena. – It all depends on the degree of damage, the characteristics of the body and compliance with the rules of recovery. A few days later, preferably a week, after the stitches are removed, you can resume exercising in the gym. Of course, without heavy loads and, of course, without purely boxing training, much less sparring. But light fitness is absolutely real.”

Another thing is that now the postponement of the Usyk-Fury fight from February 17 to May 18 looks even more strange. In any case, this is the formal reason for postponing the fight for the second time in a row. Let us remind you that the unification fight between Usyk and Fury was originally supposed to take place on December 23, but was postponed due to injuries received by the Briton in a 10-round fight with ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou. Moreover, even then Fury’s injuries did not look critical, although, of course, each injury and damage is individual and only the athlete himself and his doctor are able to assess the degree of their severity.

In this whole story, only one fact from Fury’s career is confusing. On February 22, 2020, the Gypsy King was supposed to have a second fight with Deontay Wilder – the first ended in a draw. However, five months before the fight with the American, Fury, in a seemingly easy fight with Otto Wahlin, which lasted all 12 rounds, received the most severe injuries in his professional career. Tyson received two very deep cuts, and ended the fight bloodied.

“The cuts I saw on Tyson were the worst I have ever encountered. And there are two of them. Although the larger one looked worse, the smaller one on the eyelids bothered us more. However, Tyson is abnormal by nature, and everything heals quickly,” said the then mentor of the Gypsy King, Ben Davsion.

However, these injuries did not prevent Fury from returning to the training room 10 days after the fight with Wallin. Perhaps it was the poor form in the fight with the Swede, which led to such consequences, that forced the Gypsy King to take preparations more seriously, especially since the five and a half month gap between fights made it possible to do without a postponement. And yes, in February 2020, Fury knocked out Wilder, winning the WBC belt. Between the fights with Ngannou and Usyk, taking into account the repeated postponement, Fury will have seven months to prepare. And who knows, maybe three extra months for preparation, assessing your form in the fight with Ngannou and before the fight with Usyk is the main reason for shifting the fight to May.
