President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) Mikhail Mamiashvili told that the European Championship, which took place in Romania, showed the ability of Russian athletes to fight for places on the podium in current conditions, this is the main result.
The European Wrestling Championships, which took place in Bucharest, ended on Sunday. As neutral athletes, the Russians won three gold, four silver and seven bronze medals. The leader in the medal standings was the Turkish team, with 7 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals.
“I don’t think that in current conditions there is a scale to evaluate our performance at the European Championships. We saw the ability of our guys to fight for podium places, that’s the most important thing. It was difficult to count on young people without experience of international competitions in the conditions in which we were placed by our partners and, unfortunately, by the hands of the International Olympic Committee.
At the European Championships, in terms of the number of medals won in classic wrestling, we occupy first place in the general team standings. Nine out of ten medals for our team were won by beginners. Eight of them were won by the juniors of the day. These guys are now possible candidates for the Olympic team. As for freestyle wrestling, it is clear that certain mechanisms were in play and that the problems could not be resolved structurally, everything was decided at the very last moment. But it doesn’t matter, we will continue to work,” Mamiashvili told .
