UFC lightweight champion trainer Islam Makhacheva Javier Mendez says the Russian fighter’s next fight could take place in June.
In 2023, 32-year-old Makhachev made two successful title defenses in fights with Australian Alexander Volkanovski, and also rose to first place in the ranking of the best UFC fighters, regardless of the category of weight.
— Can we say with certainty that he will return in June?
— Ramadan ends in April, after which it will probably take two months (to prepare). So yes, June. Hopefully he gets two fights, we’ll see what the UFC can offer him.
– Is there a specific opponent you want for him?
– No, it doesn’t matter. Ideally, he would like to fight for the welterweight title in order to win two belts. But this is now unlikely to happen. He who is offered to Islam will accept and defeat the adversary. After that, I hope that as a reward he will have the chance to fight for the welterweight title,” Mendes said in an interview with the Helen Yee Sports Youtube channel.
In mixed martial arts, Makhachev won 25 victories and suffered one defeat.
