“In the fight between Agrba and Borrego, we will have a superposition of styles” – Kravtsov

Russian fight Khariton Agrba and Mexican José Miguel Borrego for the title of contender for the IBA belt up to 67 kg will be interesting mainly in the battle of styles, said the chairman of the coaching council of the Russian Boxing Federation, Eduard Kravtsov.

This 10-round fight will headline the next IBA Night of Champions series tournament, which will take place on March 3 in Sochi. Agrba has 13 victories in the professional ring, he takes first place on the BoxRec portal among Russian welterweight boxers, and the athlete also takes 12th place in the WBA rankings.

Borrego has 20 wins and four losses. The Mexican will box for the first time outside the United States and Mexico.

— Borrego is a strong and good professional boxer, he was even once an amateur champion of North America, but he received his main training as a professional. Why did Borrego appear and why exactly will he participate in the contender’s fight… He had already held a ranking fight at the IBA Night of Champions tournament in Kazakhstan and defeated 2023 world champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov earlier provided that. And thanks to this result, the Mexican obtained the right to box for the status of challenger.

Borrego is a purely professional boxer. Yes, he is a little “clumsy”, but very impactful and patient. Preaches a purely Mexican style. And in this confrontation, a superposition of styles awaits us. Khariton is more of an intellectual boxer. He can box both offensively and on the counterattack. For the first time, Agrba will box against a Mexican opponent, and a fairly high level one. A very interesting fight awaits us,” said Kravtsov, whose remarks to were provided by the press service of the Russian Boxing Federation.

In the co-main event of the show on March 3 in Sochi, there will be a fight for the title of IBA European champion in the weight category up to 63.5 kg. 2019 European Games and 2017 European Championship finalist Gabil Mamedov (1-0) and 2015 World Championship bronze medalist Belarusian Dmitry Asanov (7-0, KO 3) will compete for the vacant belt. The fight will last 8 rounds.

According to the BoxRec portal, Mamedov and Asanov met three times in Olympic boxing, and the Belarusian was stronger each time. Asanov defeated Mamedov by majority decision in the final of the European Games in Minsk, as well as by split decision in the European Olympic qualifying semi-final in Paris. Another fight took place in Elista in 2018, when Asanov was stronger by unanimous decision.

– Over the past two years, Gabil has lost only one fight: at the World Championships in Tashkent. Both Mamedov and Asanov have Olympic boxing badges, and Dmitry also has good experience competing as a professional. In their confrontation, the score was 3-0 in favor of Asanov, but they met as amateurs. And Gabil has a unique opportunity to take revenge for his previous defeats. In my opinion, the odds are equal here. We expect an interesting confrontation between two trained boxers, capable of fighting in different ways,” Kravtsov added.

The IBA Night of Champions tournament will be broadcast live on the channel.
