According to ESPN US, Topuria would like to make at least one defense of the lightweight belt before the fight with Makhachev. The athlete himself said this in a conversation with Spanish journalists.

Recall that Topuria won the UFC championship belt by defeating Australian Alex Volkanovski. Their fight took place at UFC 298. Topuria knocked out his opponent in the second round.
