The former world champion again considers the British favorite
Former world light welterweight champion Amir Khan considers the holder of the WBC heavyweight belt Tyson Fury favorite in the fight with the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO champion Alexander Usik.
“I always preferred my friend Tyson Fury. I think Tyson is a better fighter, he has better skills. Plus, in my opinion, he is bigger and stronger. Fury beat big heavyweights.”
“Of course, everyone is leaning towards Tyson because he is the current linear world heavyweight champion. But Usyk can cause a lot of problems with his style. He is a very unorthodox fighter and extremely difficult to hit. I prefer Fury, but what a fight it will be.”
In December, Khan also named Tyson as the favorite to win the undisputed title. Amir believes that the size of the “Gypsy King” will be a key factor.
Fury and Usyk were supposed to fight on February 17 for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion. Lennox Lewis was appointed special guest of the event, and the undercard included fights between former IBF world heavyweight champion Jay Opetai, 19-year-old Moses Itauma and IBF world super featherweight champion Joe Cordina.
Two weeks before the fight, Fury was injured during sparring. The Briton’s injury required stitches.
The unification fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion has received a new date – Fury and Usyk are scheduled to meet in the ring on May 18. The event, as before, will be hosted by the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight, increasing their number to 5-6 people.
Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million. At the same time, the contract for the fight between the Ukrainian and the British has a rematch clause.
