Fighter Tokov admitted his self-preservation instinct disappears when he fights too often

Former Bellator middleweight title challenger Anatoly Tokov remembers how four fights held in 2015 influenced him.

— For me, the year ended with a battle with AJ Matthews at RIZIN. It was normal, I didn’t feel any difficulty. And at first I had three fights in three months – it was a bit difficult: constant weight loss, the need to keep in shape and the lack of development opportunities. When you fight at such a pace, you can’t gain physicality or learn anything new. Just stay fit.

In my case, the difficulty is also that my self-preservation instinct disappears when I fight too often. I don’t have the nervousness I usually have before fights. I happened to walk into the cage and I didn’t care who I was fighting. For me, fighting was like drinking tea. And on several occasions it played a cruel joke on me. As Mike Tyson says, fear is a fire that can either burn you or warm you. It has to be there, but you have to control it. But I just didn’t have that feeling,” Tokov said, as quoted by RT.

Tokov will face Magomed Ismailov on March 9 in Moscow at the ASA tournament dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the league. Tokov, 33, has 30 wins and three losses.
