Ukrainian boxer – on the removal of representatives of the aggressor country from international competitions
Former World Light Heavyweight Champion Alexander Gvozdyk spoke about war Russia against Ukraine and the need to remove boxers from the Russian Federation from fights.
“On the one hand, Russia attacked Ukraine, and almost the entire civilized community supports us, and if this is a war, then it should be on all fronts. Sport seems to be out of politics, but it has always been like this only for athletes, ”said Gvozdyk.
“For my part, I see it as absolutely logical to ban Russian athletes from representing their state in competitions. On the one hand, I understand athletes who have devoted their entire lives to sports and now they cannot compete in international competitions. Except for those who openly support, as they say, “special operation”, I do not consider the athletes to be guilty of what is happening. Professional sport is not the Olympic Games, here the boxer first of all represents himself. On the other hand, do you still believe in justice?
Gvozdyk retired in the summer of 2020. The Ukrainian fought his last fight in the fall of 2019, losing to Artur Beterbiev by technical knockout in the tenth round.
Gvozdyk became world champion in 2018 by defeating Adonis Stevenson. After that, Alexander had one successful title defense.
Ukraine is opposing the military aggression of the Russian Federation for the 148th day.
